Riverside Community Health Foundation to provide free Doula services for expectant members due after Jan 15

January 10, 2020

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif – Riverside Community Health Foundation (RCHF) and Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) are proud to announce a partnership to bring doula support services to IEHP Members through the Doula Access Program beginning in January 2020.

The Doula Access Program is a collaboration between IEHP and RCHF to provide pregnant IEHP Members with a doula - a trained childbirth professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and after childbirth. Growing evidence suggests that doula support during the perinatal period can support better birth outcomes, decrease stress and anxiety, and aid in the overall patient experience.

“Women with Medi-Cal in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties experience various challenges during pregnancy: a scarcity of Providers in some regions, geographic distance, and significant social needs,” said Dr. Priya Batra, Senior Medical Director for Family and Community Health at IEHP. “By providing social and emotional support and knowledge, doulas can help our Members and their families better navigate birth and the postpartum transition.”

“Riverside Community Health Foundation is honored to serve the community in this capacity,” said Shené Bowie-Hussey, Vice President of Health Strategies at RCHF. “Maternal wellbeing is important to the health of the community, and we are committed to make a difference through this partnership and beyond.”

Families can expect to work with a doula who will help them navigate childbirth, the healthcare system, provide compassionate care, and ongoing emotional and informational support.

“Doulas have been perceived to be a luxury or a privilege for those who have a lot of disposable income,” said Deidre Coutsoumpos, CD(DONA), CE(BFW), ICCE, CLEC Senior Health Educator for Riverside Community Health Foundation and lead for the Doula Access Program. “The Doula Access Program will completely cover the cost of a doula through IEHP. This will afford lower income families this necessary support without compromising their budgets.”

The Doula Access Program is now accepting applications for expectant mothers who are IEHP Members, live in Riverside or San Bernardino County, and due after January 15.
