BLYTHE, Calif – On Friday August 17 at 1:38 p.m. Blythe Police responded to the area of 14th Ave and S. Intake Blvd., in regarding an industrial accident involving Southern California Edison.

Officers found Southern California Edison employee John Udell, 39, of Yucca Valley, being tended to by other Edison employees. Units from the Blythe Fire Department and River Medical responded and began treatment. Udell was alert and responsive when officers arrived.

Officers learned that Udell had been working in a boom truck on high voltage power lines near the intersection. The lines were believed to have been de-energized. Udell came in contact with the lines, and suffered electrical burns on his arms and torso.

Traffic on South Intake Blvd. was shut down with the assistance of deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, to allow an emergency transport helicopter to land on South Intake Blvd. Udell was flown to a burn unit in Phoenix.
