BLYTHE, Calif At the regular City Council meeting held on Tuesday at Council Chambers in City Hall, Mayor Galvan made a presentation to a group of Flag Football players that distinguished themselves in tournament play in December.

In his statement, Galvan said:

The Joe Wine Blythe Recreation C-Division (3rd and 4th grade) All-Stars won the Inland Valleys Municipal Athletic Association Flag Football Tournament on December 3.

The weekend of the December 17 and 18 they again represented Blythe as the IVMAA Champions of the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation Flag Football Tournament. The SCMAF Tournament consisted of 12 teams from throughout Southern California in Oxnard.

In the two tournaments, the Blythe defense shut out all of their opponents not allowing any of the other teams to score. The near-perfect defense along with an offense that scored an average of 48 points was unstoppable.

The travelling expenses were paid for with the money raised at two Duck Races in November hosted by B and B Bait. Thank you to Wayne Pinkerton and crew as well as all of the parents and other individuals that helped make this possible.

With that, individual members of the team were called to the front of the Chambers to shake hands with a gauntlet of Councilmen. Members of the champion team are: Cayden Anderson, Zachary Cebreros, Johnny Dodd, Brian Johnson Jr., Tommy Johnson, Daniel Juarez, Blake Phipps, Martin Ramos, Joel Rayner, Michael Sanchez, Chase Shriner and Kade White.

Head Coach Richard Johnson was present to receive the award along with his assistant coaches, Jeff Phipps, Brian Johnson and Justin Raynor.

Coach Johnson mentioned that this was the seventh championship team he has coached over the past two decades. The staff of the Desert Independent adds their congratulations to those of the City Council.
