BLYTHE, Calif For the first time, the Palo Verde Valley High School Swim Team held an official CIF swim meet. The team which was newly formed last spring, held the meet at the competition pool. The temperature was warm and the water perfect for swimming.

The following results are as reported by Asst. Coach Kim Valenzuela:

  • For the boys, in the relays they had 2nd place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay. Robert Flores gave a 1st place finish in the 50 freestyle and a 2nd place finish in the 100 freestyle. Brendan Holmes finished 3rd in the 200 freestyle, and a 1st place in the 100 breaststroke. Majerle Salazar finished 3rd in the 50 freestyle. Ryan Shields had a 4th place finish in the 50 freestyle and a 3rd place finish in the 100 butterfly. T.J. Koivisto finished 2nd in the 100 backstroke. Pedro Espinoza finished 4th in the 50 freestyle and 2nd in the 100 breaststroke.

  • For the girls, in the relays they had second place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay. Tabitha Hyduke had a 3rd place finish in the 200 freestyle, and 2nd place finish in the 100 freestyle. Haily Chute had a 1st place finish in the 50 freestyle and a 3rd place in the 100 breaststroke. Shelby Courter placed 3rd in the 50 freestyle. Margaret Robertson placed 2nd in the 100 butterfly and 2nd in the 100 breaststroke.

Swimmers of the meet were Margaret Robertson and Ryan Shields. They were chosen for their hard work that they put in during practices and for taking on the 100 butterfly. This stroke is the most difficult out of all the competitive strokes. I'm very proud of them for stepping up to the block and taking on the challenge.

On our team, we also have middle school swimmers. Their strokes are improving daily and I know they will be very competitive when they enter high school.

Next week we will swim against Southwest on Tuesday 4/24 and Imperial on Thursday on 4/26. Both meets are home and begin at 3:15.

I am very proud of our swimmers. We are a developing team but I am excited to see where our swimmers will be in the years to come. We have a beautiful pool and I feel very lucky to be working with a group of dedicated teenagers.
