Contraband Smuggling into Prison

November 21, 2012

BLYTHE, Calif On November 14, Colorado River Station deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of westbound I-10 near Wiley's Well Road. The reporting party saw a vehicle parked on the side of the freeway picking up a subject who had just walked out of the desert area north of the State Prison.

Deputies located the vehicle and contacted Raymond Salaiz, 34 of Rosemead, CA, Michael Nides, 25 of Montclair, CA, and Summer Kelley, 35, inside. A consensual search of the vehicle revealed two pipes used for smoking illegal drugs and night vision goggles. California Department of Corrections Investigation Unit members, along with United States Border Patrol agents followed shoe impressions through the desert to the north fence of Ironwood State Prison. A bag containing illegal contraband was found just inside the prison facility fence. Through a joint investigation, it was determined that Salaiz had entered prison grounds and dropped off the contraband.

Nides was arrested and later booked into the Blythe Jail for Possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Salaiz was booked into the Blythe Jail for Violation of Probation and Felon on Prison Grounds. The California Department of Corrections Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation on Salaiz for bringing contraband into a prison facility. Kelley was released from custody with no charges pending.
