Boys Get Caught Spray Painting

May 11, 2012

BLYTHE, Calif – On Tuesday May 8 at about 6:39 in the evening, officers of the Blythe Police Department responded to a business in the 1500 block of east Hobsonway regarding a possible vandalism. Responding officers caught two 16 year old boys next to the business "red handed" with cans of spray paint.

A citizen had reported hearing noises coming from the business and smelling an odor of paint in the area. The two 16 year old boys are both of Blythe. The paint cans they had matched the color of what they thought passed for artwork on the building. Anyway, due to the dollar amount, these kids were detained for felony vandalism.

This type of desecration or graffiti included monikers which have been encountered at other scenes in the city. Police are working to identify additional crimes committed by these two boys.

Our Department has been actively investigating the increase in graffiti and it seems that there has been a lot more lately said Chief Steve Smith. “It takes us a while to find out who is doing this, but once we identify the moniker you will see the damage slow down. In the last four weeks we have arrested four juveniles and identified their work and we will be billing the parents for the cost of the damage Smith said. “In this case a good citizen called us while it was happening which assisted our officers in apprehending the suspects. I encourage more citizen involvement, if you see it call us if you know who is doing the damage call us, please”.

Persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Anyone with information about this or any criminal activity is urged to contact the Blythe Police Department at (760) 922-6111. Information can be given anonymously by calling (760) 921-CARE.
